Sarvodaya Japan
Established in November 2009
Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne founded the Sarvodaya Shramadana movement, a rural community development movement in 1958, which gained increasingly great worldwide reputation in the following decades. Since 1976, Dr. Ariyaratne has visited Japan a number of times. Many Japanese have been impressed by his lectures, and some visited Sri Lanka to take part in the Sarvodaya movement and others became supporters of the movement. Young people from Japan and other countries who have visited Sarvodaya communities are engaged in activities applying their experiences in their social contexts.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its foundation in 2008, individuals and organizations in Japan that had been associated with Sarvodaya in one way or another gathered in Tokyo, and discussed the establishment of the Sarvodaya Japan, which was realized in 2009.
The purposes of the organization are to support the activities of the Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka, to learn from its philosophy and methodology of development and their experiences both successes and failures and apply them as a social development model in our community development and human resource development activities.
We will conduct information dissemination, support activities and interactive activities together with the Sarvodaya movement.
